I Find Comfort Buried Deep Within History’s Pages . . .

Lately, I’ve been doing a little research. Not for anything in particular just to understand some things. I started researching early American poets and from there I read a little about The Reign Of Terror . . . You might know the Reign of Terror as the French Revolution, but it really wasn’t. It happened somewhere in the middle. The people of France rose up and heads rolled . . .

Louis XVI and wife Marie and other leaders walked the stairs at the beginning. And as always, history remembers those events with purpose . . . Life doesn’t always happen with purpose in mind. But the soil ran red . . . Somewhere between 18,000 and 40,000 . . . But I bet it was far more than that.

And somehow they did some statistics, how? Anyway, they say that 8% were the upper crust, 6% were religious sorts, 14% middle class, 70% were those that just got in the way, crimes and the likes . . .

You see while all this was going on fear had grasped the country, so many people starved. I surely can’t imagine such a time . . . And those that started the Reign of Terror, they too met their end at the gallows.

And then came, Adolf and his reign, his numbers were 8 million . . . History repeats, again and again.

And to come to think of it, all those that live by the sword, do indeed die by the sword. Clichés and you know they usually are true. Maybe not literally, but then smite works in mysterious ways. Rest assured . . .

This year is our King George’s last year of his monarchy. Thank the good Lord. I’m not sure what comes next, although I do know it can’t be any worse then where we’ve been. Change is in the wind . . . Life as an American is riding the wave and we will again be so very proud, together as Nation, again, a proud nation. The Brave Few. Dan

I'm Tired of Watching CNN . . .

I’m Tired Of Watching CNN

I’m tired of watching CNN, I’m tired of all of it . . . My mom always said, if you’ve got nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all. And so I’m avoiding all newspapers, news channels and blogs. Mine included.

I wish for a moment we could stand back and see where we’re going . . . If Corporate leaders are to run the whole world then understand that you’re either an asset or a liability? A liability is always cut, an asset is merely property . . .

Make sure that’s the path you want for you and yours to dance to. No matter who you are, you’ll be owned by corporate interests . . .

Oil prices are at an all time high . . . I own a GMC diesel 3500 . . . Today I got a letter from a Dealership. They would like to buy my truck. Sure they do. I take great care of it and that truck is not one of those tiny foreign models, it’s a big bad boy. I always tell everyone sincerely, I could pull your truck and your house with that bad boy. It’s true. Not very far, just off its foundation.

And now gas prices are going up . . . Hey, what about diesel? Folks, diesel has been paying your way for the last five months. Soon you’ll be paying the same as me . . . How’s it feel to be screwed? The same people complaining are the same ones that said Globalization was a good thing, the same people that said labor prices are too high . . .

The truth will hurt you more than me. Business will always seek lower costs, anyway they can get them. But you and me, whether you own a business or work for one, we are not a business, we work for a living. Lower wages mean lower wages for everyone. Oh and did you the American Market is tied to American Wages? When the market can’t get high prices, it has to lower its price . . . Even if it is below cost.

In the long term no one wins . . . Short run, those at the top will win, that is until it turns against them. And it always does. Greed destroys everyone and everything around it.

No new taxes . . . Right. Wisconsin just added a dollar to a pack of cigarettes to be used for, I forget where . . . Oh, to pay for children’s health insurance . . . It’s like, if you could kill with a gun, then everyone with an index finger, we’re going to sacrifice that for the whole . . . You won’t mind too much if we cut off your index finger, right? Could you visualize that pile of index fingers . . . ?

I’m not sure if it’s the Republicans going nuts or the Democrats running amok? Doesn’t matter much, they’re all the same. Does anyone remember a party held in Boston several hundred years ago? I wonder what that was all about . . . Tea, wasn’t it?

The truth . . . The end doesn’t justify any means. Both sides believe it does and this has to stop. That’s what got us into Iraq. That’s what got Bush into power, thank you Mr. Clinton . . . That’s what got us into Vietnam.

Everyday we live on a path, an American path . . . We used to know what that meant, what it meant to be American and somewhere we figured that the world needed to know who we were . . . Silly, we have become those we fight, those that hate. The Brave Few. Dan

What is Censorship . . .

What is Censorship?

The action of stopping the transmission or publication of a matter considered objectionable. So the dictionary states . . . But censorship is any act that stops the normal activity publishing to readers . . . And it’s funny how so many just don’t get it.

As a writer I have a problem with all censors. Not because some things are of a nature that offends, but because it is easy to earmark anything as being offensive . . . I have always been for the little guy

. . . In the late fifties and early sixties. It wasn’t a proud time in the U.S. We had the so called communist threat and we rounded up citizens as subversives, jailed them and even put two to death. Freedom of speech is not a right but merely words. You see it works like this, what ever the majority wants, it gets. The Constitution was penned for those of us who sit outside the masses . . . And a Senator from my state started the whole witch hunt. Something I’m not very proud of.

I’m against all needless rules. I don’t believe the majority is always right. If we were, we would never go to war for unknown reasons.

And then there was Vietnam . . . A war that was a police action, to stop the spread of the plague called communism. And for all the trouble we got a wall in Washington for the fallen. Now we can go and feel the pain, get an etching of a fallen friend. And our leaders figured out that the draft was what was wrong with that war . . . What is a draft? Conscription, forced service to fight in the name of our country. We have always had conscription until now.

And do we learn . . . The Russians got their butts handed to them Afghanistan. For ten years they fought until they fell . . . And now we find ourselves there also and in Iraq . . . Turkey is fighting on their border. We don’t count the dead that die in hospitals . . . We use contractors to kill and the media … And today in Pakistan a leader was slain . . .

And I was looking back on this year, I realized that this is a year I’m not so proud of . . . From Imus, Michael Vick, Jones, Nowack, Paris Hilton, from all of these a common thread exists . . . We have become a nation of haters. And the internet is quickly becoming just another boiling pot of thought. A place where the haters can get together and do what they do best . . . I feel the pain that the hate is spreading. I hope I’m wrong, but then look at Blog Catalog . . .

I have reached my Limit on friends . . . The reason is server space. But that doesn’t hold water. It doesn’t because all they had to do is eliminate dead links on our friend’s links . . .

And someone said it was their servers they should be allowed to do what they want . . . Friends that’s so true, but who’s making them do anything different. Words and actions are two separate things.

They’ve done it in the past. But pressure, you know how that works. The one that sits back, get s**t on. And I’m not really mad at the act, I’m mad that we are so quick to throw freedom away . . . I call this censorship. Maybe most won’t see it that way. But anyone can justify taking a stand that causes a writer not to write. You see, I get requests all the time from members of BC to be their friend. I can’t . . .

The funny thing is that all the others with their small numbers of friends don’t maintain their friend lists . . . Too lazy I guess.

Anyway ever sense I been at BC, I have been getting job offers from the Judicial System . . . I wonder? My thoughts . . . Blogging, the internet was developed by the DOD in case of a holocaust . . . All computers wouldn’t be wiped out . . . And during Clinton they gave it to us . . . Ever wonder why?

They talk about wire tapping in Congress, so you think their going to do something about it, their not. Ever wonder who Google is? Who Blog Catalog is or could be? Now they tried to pass a bill to give the phone companies a pass on prosecution . . . ATT bought SBC Global. They bought Yahoo. Wasn’t Micro something looking into buying Google or maybe they did . . . ?

Hey do you remember MS getting off with a slap on the wrist for monopolistic practice? Could it be . . . No, it couldn’t, could it? How’s your computer running these days? Mine’s kind of slow . . . I wonder. Once I sent an email to myself, because my emails were getting to me very slowly . . . So I simply sent an email to myself, asking who was reading my emails . . . And when I got it the subject said, ciao . . .

Ever wonder who owns what? It doesn’t much matter, because with pressure we know what they’ll become.

The haters are growing in their numbers and the rules are growing. And the internet is already closing on our freedoms, and this door will be shut forever. So I’m gonna get mine now . . . How about you?

Have you looked around lately? Camera’s dot our intersections. Watchdogs . . . They record our transactions at the ATM’s and outside of buildings. Our emails are being read, phone calls are being listened to for what ever reason . . . The truth, fear is the plague . . . And so we go to work each day, pay our taxes and dream of retirement . . .

One thing everyone needs to know, the bad guys don’t use the internet . . . We do. Ever wonder who paid for the internet? The porn sites . . . Things are never what they seem. The Brave Few. Dan

Christmas is almost here . . .

Christmas is almost here . . .

Christmas is almost here and then comes my annual soul searching. This year I have so much to be thankful for.

+ My son is CANCER-FREE
+ The publication of Sleepless Nights
+ Finishing Writing Sins of a Father

And I always make a list of goals and prioritize them. And this year will be no different, though my readers will notice that my blogs will not consume more of my time than things I view as being more important. Blogging is necessary, although it is not going to be number one on my list, anymore.

What I’ve learned is that so many people hide behind a façade, too afraid to be themselves . . . I prefer knowing my friends, not something that was just pretend. I write fiction, I don’t live it. Our country is living in a mist. Soon the sun will heat the earth and reality will burn through and we’re going to realize with regrets what we have let slip between our fingers.

I thought that if my readers would read my words they would take a moment and realize what is at stake. And then they would catch to the wave . . . Everyone has had a part to play and everyone is just as guilty of looking the other way. Does anyone remember the pain of 29? No one reading this I’m sure.

I am not overly religious, though I believe in the words of the Bible . . . Probably for reasons that would astonish most. And yet I know that any group that hates can’t be good . . .

My goals have always been to try to help this world to overcome the hatred and to become great again. And then everything else just fit in where it may. But now I realize that everyone has their own silly reasons for being and nothing I do will help them find a cause more righteous than what others have sold to them . . . You see, hatred is a tool used by leaders to control you and me. And we decide not to hate anymore, we take their power away from them.

And this Christmas time our leaders would have us believe they have won in Iraq and yet no matter what they tell me, I can’t see a victory with so many lies . . . So we’re supposed to believe they have achieved what so many have failed to do. And it stinks when the words start up again about Iran, Korea, Syria . . . Will the next leader be any different?

How could they? Our leaders think they have found a way to have wars and peace at home at the same time . . . That’s because we’re so stupid . . . To back a war is to give them what they need so desperately. It’s funny, I mean the bridges to no where . . . You don’t really think the hundred dollar toilet seats are for real? And now your President doesn’t even bother putting everything in the budget, he doesn’t have too. No one will hold him accountable. And the economy doesn’t even look at the cost of food or gas to calculate inflation . . . And so one day we’ll surely know 29 once again . . .

And the internet is great . . . It allows us to get our message out, or does it? What if search engines don’t put your posts on their sites, but send them to some watch dog instead? What if ISP’s screen everything for certain words, regardless of intent or what was meant? What if the social blog logs are really gardens of chatter for the gardeners to sift through? Where we’re going, someone has gone before us . . . And it didn’t have good results. Warrior and Wars. The Brave Few. Dan

We need to shift our focus . . .

We need to shift our focus . . .

During and after the cold war, we became deathly afraid of community, maybe with a good reason . . . And now we’re afraid or working for the common good and that doesn’t help anyone.

Look at it this way . . . Our local governments are willing to take anyone for any position. They are the ones making budgets and spending our tax dollars. We don’t know what they know, how they think or even if they are responsible. And the same gets magnified at the state and Federal levels.

Everyone knows this . . . Everyone wants to pay less taxes, but are you willing to do with less?

Are you ready to go back to gravel roads? Are you ready to tear down school buildings for online schools? Are you ready for private companies to pay their fair share? I’m talking about the stadiums? The cable the cable companies use? The electric provider’s grid? Don’t forget we paid for the infrastructure, we should be compensated . . .

And all those contractors, they’re raking in the doe because all they provide labor . . . You should be mad. Republicans you should be mad for the entitlements have gone to members of our tribe and must likely, not you . . . It will never be you or me.

Today in my community, I noticed camera’s on the new intersection . . . Why? Because we might need them . . . Pray tell who’s watching you?

Everyone should read Mein Kampf and yes, Communist Manifesto, but keep your dictionary next to you. You’ll need it. Hate is a tool to bring members into the fold. The more you hate the more haters fill your ranks.

Today both parties use hate . . . All they want is your vote. They’ll throw you a bone, maybe make you think they’re in your corner. And what’s truly hilarious, is their pork makes us think they are working for us . . . We’ve got to come together before it’s too late. Katrina should have been the wake up . . . Katrina could have been you or me.

Everyone wants you to believe that Iraq is because of 9-11, that it is over oil. It’s neither of those . . . It’s simply to spend the national resources so the other side can’t . . .

And now we’ll never get healthcare, education for all, maybe even Social Security funded . . . No matter what they do or don’t do, they win. No Government can be so chaotic without being planned . . . The Brave Few. Dan

Rambling on the Wires . . .

Rambling on the wires . . .

I haven’t been feeling like writing about politics. I just don’t like the hate that is there. I think of myself as a Republican, although, I am a human being first, not a Republican, not an American. You see where this is going. Who you think you are, will determine your choices . . . And you must know yourself, before any of it will really be who you are.

To vote Republican as a Union Worker is not too true to who you are or is it? It all depends on what you value and the order you value it in.

What if we eliminated public schools? Our taxes would be less right? No . . . Our schools would be better. Not so fast . . . Those that couldn’t afford the better schools would get the raw end of the stick as always. We’d home school. Right, don’t we read anymore . . . The public school system was created because we had a society of illiterate workers. Sure we had the Rockefellers and all the Robber Barrens. Wonder why, so many of them were saved from the Titanic?

What if we eliminated the American Armed Services? Taxes would go down, wouldn’t they? No . . . We’d pay more for the private army.

What if we eliminated the Post Office? Taxes? No . . . It would cost more to mail a letter.

So what does it mean . . . Balance my friend, a smaller, more efficient, Government. Whoever thought Republicans wanted privatization anyway? The New Conservatives, why? Simply, because with a smaller Government they win or privatization they win also.

And why? Because we believe we will pay less taxes. But wait . . . If the Fed doesn’t do it, who will? You know who. In the short run, we’ll get their tax break. That is until, you know who starts taking on those activities the Fed won’t do anymore.

The truth, you pay X. X is made up of State taxes and Federal taxes and City taxes and maybe County taxes. If the Federal Taxes goes down, the others will go up to cover the lost services. And because they are starting from nothing, it’ll be more. And that will be X + Y, where Y will be the cost of the new service startup.

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are die hard Republicans . . . They would never ever think to vote another way.

I wonder if auto-bots are good for our way of life? A paradigm shift doesn’t solve it . . . The paradox is destroying us . . . Then what? Start over . . . Civil War, usually does that.

I am a human being first, remember? War is not acceptable. Then what? Balance . . . Our Government is what it was designed to be. Now we need to understand the Government is not the enemy as long as we keep the checks in place and as long as we balance the two. That is privatization and Government, conservative and democrat and work together . . .

Screw this up and we’ll have to deal with it and the truth, our American Civil War wasn’t fought over slavery . . . It was fought because one day Senators walked out, southern states seceded from the Union . . . Some might think that’s not so bad, but then we would look just like Europe with 50 countries with passports to boot!!!! The Brave Few. Dan

Here We Go Again . . .

I really don’t like any of the candidates for President . . . Every one of them has great defects in my thoughts. Let’s call it like it really is, no party will alienate the Illegal Aliens because they control votes . . . Maybe it’s just perceived votes, but no one wants to lose the election because rallied at the polls afraid they’d be sent back.

Ok, let’s say they stay. What does that do for us? More taxes going at the retiring baby boomer crises, for the Bushes Deficit. To be honest with you, I think we should throw all the bums out, even Lou Dobbs . . . He’s really not helping anything.

Sure everyone with a brain would like to pay less in taxes, but you won’t if everything gets kick to the states . . . That means duplicating everything fifty times. Then why would we need the Fed? Wait a minute, didn’t we do all this before? No that was because of slavery. Are you sure? Seems to me it didn’t start until the Southern States Senators walked out . . . Hmmm.

Anyway, everyone is against price caps . . . But folks it has to happen, it’s out of control and no one is being reasonable. They just as soon kick the money somewhere else . . . Did you hear the rich are fleeing to Dubai, what does that mean?

They got off Scott Free . . . A new world order, that’s what we let Bush do, that’s us, the Republicans. Boy don’t we feel smart . . .

And you know what’s coming? Fifty percent taxes . . . Oh and they’ll throw in healthcare. Maybe that’s a good deal. But you know that’s what I proposed long before Bush and 9-11.

Something like this . . .
+ 50% taxes
+ Free college for everyone forever
+ National healthcare
+ National Pension Plan
+ 6 Weeks Vacation for everyone
+ Mandatory Community Service forever for every American
( Build a bridge, low income housing, help a child )

Sounds like socialism . . . How else do you think we’re going to survive those modern Rockefellers?

What do you think will even the playing field with China? Didn’t we beat Communism? I think it beat itself, the same way our cherished capitalism is going. Privatization is obsessive behavior, we can’t afford run away inflation and that’s what that is . . . Is anyone happy with what their making? Now I ask you, privatization, really? Sounds like we’ll need a bushel basket to carry the dollars we’ll need to pay for a loaf of bread.

These guys are criminals . . . They don’t need us, but we have no choice . . . The Brave Few. Dan

I think all politicians are nuts . . .

Politicians are nuttier than squirrel poop . . . Sorry, J.K. Rowling and all you Harry Potter fans for steeling her metaphor, I couldn’t help myself. It was just too good not to use again.

Why now? Well everyone is saying the surge is working in Iraq . . . We have to believe because no news is good news, isn’t it? To be honest, whether they tame the rattler or not doesn’t take away the fact that the jumped into it’s nest, does it?

Long ago I learned that if I attempted a project with an endless budget and no time constraints, I couldn’t lose, so who are they kidding? What we need to realize is this bunch thinks they are better than us, that they are acting for us. Right . . . ? Now the Democrats are jumping on board with the surge. Hey Dip Shits, you can’t tell me you haven’t figured it out? The insurgents have moved somewhere else. Pakistan seems ripe for the picking . . . Da?

This thing is a long way from being over. And the dollars are going to go into the trillions. And why now? Seriously why are the Democrats jumping on board? Can anyone speak Chinese? It seems the die is cast. Iran, China, F-it, let’s just take on the world, why not, we’re better than them, right?

Hey where did all the rich people go? Can you say the Kingdom, Dubai or is it King George’s middle name, Dubia, oh that’s spelled with a W.

To be honest, I don’t like war. I don’t like that for 3000 plus lives we destroyed two countries and killed so many. I don’t like the lies they used, for their shock and awe. I don’t like that they all decided to use a private army. I don’t like what they did to the Geneva Convention and our sacred Constitution all for a victory . . . It just won’t taste as good as it could. And you know George is right, history will always remember him kindly. The deck has always been stacked . . .

So what does that mean? Maybe our honorable, beloved country isn’t so honorable? Maybe we are only as good as our leaders? Maybe it’s all a lie? George Washington was a coward. The civil war wasn’t over slavery. The USS Maine wasn’t attacked, a boiler blew up. The Japanese declaration for war sat on FDR’s desk before the Pearl Harbor attack. Truman didn’t have to use the second bomb. Kennedy’s Bay of Pigs was a sham. LBJ lied about the bay of Tonkin and Vietnam. What about the Cole? What about 9-11? Health Insurance For Life . . .

Health Insurance For Life . . .

What if we awarded health insurance for life if a donor gave a piece of his liver, a lung, a kidney to someone who really needed it? Would you do it? I would. And to be honest that excites me . . . I believe that it is time for us to stop paying for health insurance through our employers.

What if someone signed up for being a donor when they died, would it be worthy of giving them health insurance for the rest of their life?

If everyone didn’t have to worry about health insurance do you thing we could afford to work for less? If so, then why aren’t we? I think it would allow us to be happier in our career paths . . .

How do you feel about national health? What effect do you think that has on labor costs? Do you realize that we are no longer playing in an even playing field with any of the industrialized countries?

Now is there a way to give everyone the same insurance as those in congress? I think John Edwards has the right idea, take congresses insurance away until they find a way to give every American the same coverage they enjoy. I wonder when did they become better than the people they server? The Brave Few. Dan

I Used To Believe . . .

I Used To Believe . . .

The other day I realized for the first time ever . . . That my country has become a lie and our leaders are liars. And that hurts, it hurts me to say it and it hurts because it’s true. You see I was one of the few believers left. I believed in this more perfect union founded on truth . . .

And the other day I found it lurking in our leaders actions of the past . . . And it hurt so much to write the words. Our American wars have been nothing but lies . . .

And today our leaders believe they are doing what is best for us, how else could they do what they do?

And my brother-in-law is a good man and yet he believes in them . . . I just can’t see it. I would love to believe again, but, but I just can’t.

I know the media today is a farce, but maybe it’s always been nothing more than a propaganda machine . . . I’m not sure, but that’s what I suspect. And then I look at both parties and I see them say one thing and then when they vote, nothing ever is done for us. Why? They give so many varied reasons, but in my mind only one floats to the surface . . . They are both the same.

We are heading toward a point where there won’t be any turning back . . . And no one seems to want to intervene. And this time, our children will be the ones to die . . . The Brave Few.

I Am A Republican . . .

I am a Republican . . .

I am a Republican and I believe in some social programs, Health Care, the Post Office, College for Everyone and social security for every retiree . . .

Why? Simple, not everyone lives life standing in the rainbow . . . Not everyone has the same entitlements of birth into a prosperous family. There are people who have live in poverty for three and four generations. And they need our help to break out . . .

Once we were striving to be the best country in the world . . . We were striving to help the world be more like us. Yes we were protectors for the underdogs. We were something to be proud of, and now I’m not so sure . . .

I’m not talking about soldiers, I would never ever imply that our military people are not worthy of our pride, they are . . . They have always gone above and beyond . . . And it brings tears to my eyes the way we’ve treated them.

Our current policies have brought us to a new low . . . Somewhere they have decided that the end justifies any means necessary. What defines necessary? Who defines it? Limits were set. And our current administration ripped them to shreds . . . And now we jail without due process, we torture and do not follow the Geneva Conventions, the same ones that we helped create. And we ease drop and build a state of fear . . . For what? To fight terror by becoming the enemy, I don’t get it, to leave democracy for fascism?

And we the people accept it . . . Sure they say our freedoms will come back. They are just taking a small detour . . . Right.

My Prayers Go Out To Those In Need In Minnesota . . .

A bridge too far has a tragic entry into the history books . . . And I’m sure it’s going to sound familiar as it did with Katrina . . . We hadn’t listened then, and we probably didn’t now either.

I wonder if Iraq had never happened would we have fixed what needed fixing . . . I bet no.

There are so many things that we have grown dependant on and have failed to rebuild . . . And were more concerned with HDTV than healthcare in our nation.

Dollars only go so far and were adding too many public projects to meager coffers, thinking I don’t know what . . . As if the money is an endless stream. But it’s finite, there is a point adding just one more will break any system.

The power grid for one needs updating, the rail system, highways and byways. And we don’t have any bullet trains, schools need maintenance. And still we build more. We build huge libraries and have to ask for money for books in a referendum.

And still people go hunger in our great democracy. Our people are turned away from medical services without any insurance, college is only for the affluent, and retirement becomes a soup kitchen or a food pantry on a fixed income.

And we say, we don’t want to give handouts . . . But is the money being spent wisely? And everyday we hear of the corruption in Washington, the last Republican Ted Stevens . . . Didn’t he get money for a bridge to no where? And before that the Democratic Leader in the senate, he was involved in a somewhat fishy land deal. Whatever happened to that?

And then we have the administration and their cronies and the missing billions in Iraq . . . When are we going to tell them enough?

And we just might have a problem brewing?

When does might make right? Never . . .

A security firm is growing, growing strong. . . So you would say.

They train paramilitary personnel and have a force over 25000 . . . They are securing Iraq.

The Chicago Tribune reported to have linked the University of Illinois director of police-training institute to them. They train in North Carolina and have opened a training facility in Mount Carroll, Illinois.

They wear black . . . Black uniforms, black helicopters with all the modern high tech toys . . . Just black.

The SS wore black . . . How powerful will they have to get . . .

And we just might have a problem brewing?

Hero Worship Gone Astray . . .

Hero Worship Gone Astray . . .

Today CNN interviewed a teenage girl . . . They asked her if she felt cheated because her hero had let her down?

We are so quick to judge . . . I’m not defending Michael Vick . . . I don’t care about that. I’m more concerned that we put these people on such a high pedestal for playing sports, being President, being in the movies . . . Never once does anyone put someone up there because they are a good person.

And then we expect them to be good people . . . So many had to sacrifice that just to survive the battle that got them there in the first place. That’s irony . . . Like worshiping a soldier, a combat pilot and then finding out he killed thousands . . .

Parents have to mold their child’s view of life, not add fuel to the flames. Maybe we expect too much of a hero, maybe a favorite musician is just that . . . Good at what they do.

Now my heroes don’t play sports, they aren’t in politics, don’t have all the money in the world, but they have given of themselves, sacrificed something for the better of mankind. And even with all I know about them, they can just as easily fall from grace because of some unknown scandal . . .

But I hold them above everyone because of an action, not because of all the other little nothings. They were people, first and people aren’t perfect . . . People like Gandhi, Abe Lincoln, Ben Franklin, Martin Luther King, and some pretty great writers.

And so we judge . . . And someday we’ll be judged.

Choose Your Own Heroes . . .

Choose Your Own Heroes . . .

Just because someone does great things, is not reason enough to make them your hero, is it? I wonder . . .

Athletes never asked to be our heroes. Teams buy the best players, because we like our teams to win. And not unlike you, players work for the team that pays them the most . . .

And we watch them work and when our team wins, we worship them and those that excel. They become our heroes. Not because they saved a life, not because they were good people, but because they played a game we loved well.

So let me ask you this, did you lie on your resume to get your job? Did you tell a few fibs on your taxes? Did you act on a tip that maybe wasn’t as ethical as . . .

All of us are heroes. If we hold one accountable, all of us should be held to the same standard. Our children will become what they see in us. If you lie, they’ll lie. If you cheat, they’ll cheat. And if you kill, chances are they will too.

Athletes are human too . . . They make mistakes. We may not like that, but we need to accept the fact. Most recent fallen hero, Michael Vick, quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons . . . Maybe ex-quarterback?

One mistake and you’re out . . . Our society has fallen, we no longer wait for the trial before convicting, the media makes sure we do it as quickly as they push us to do it. Once we hung criminals the same day as the offense, once we tarred and feathered those that showed their immoral side.
